Full screen refers to 4:3 aspect ratio, and will occupy the full screen of a CRT TV, it will be displayed on an LCD or similar 'widescreen' device in pillarbox (black bars on the sides) and may also be pan and scan. Widescreen generally refers to 16:9 which is closer to the cinematic original aspect ratio but may be letterboxed.

A full screen DVD uses your whole screen to display a DVD, and the widescreen DVD shows the whole scene along with the black bars at the top and bottom.

Full screen dvds are formatted for non-widescreen televisions, while widescreen dvds are formatted for widescreen televisions. If you play a full screen disc on a widescreen tv, the left and right side of the screen will have black bars. Widescreen on a full screen will create vertical black bars.

Full screen or 4:3 ratio means that the picture take up the entire screen. Wide screen or 16:9 is where there are black borders at the top and bottom.
