It takes lots of experience to tell the difference between the female and male. They are very similar in appearance. The females' crown and nape is grayish brown; males have bluish crown and nape. Females have a brownish tan colored wash to throat and breast area; males have rose color.

Male and female mourning doves are actually very similar in appearance, although males are very slightly larger and can be brighter in color. Although females lay the eggs, of course, male and female doves both share in incubating the eggs and feeding the young.

That is a good pharagraph. I live around mourning doves and never knew what the difference was. I would think that would be right.

Male and female Mourning Doves are almost indistinguishable without DNA sexing, and will take turns tending the nest and hatchlings even after they have left the nest. After maturity they are entirely similar in coloring, and after 3 months it is even difficult for the casual observer to discern an adult from a juvenile bird.

Male and female mourning doves are very similar, however, their sizes differ slightly. The male tends to be a bit larger. Their colors differ as well with the male having a more bluish crown than the female as well as a pink chest and pink plumage on the sides of its neck. The female is more of a brown color.

The males and females are almost identical. The slight difference is basically in coloring. While the male's nape feathers are usually blue, the females have gray-and-brown nape and breast. The males usualy have pinkish breast.

There is no difference in them physically, as mourning doves are exactly alike. Nesting habits are a good way to tell. Males nest during the day, females nest at night.

The male is always on top, that's how you tell the difference
