it depends on the application. a clear coat can be an acrylic or a polyurethane paint. Polyurethanes are used on wood because of its longer lasting properties, weatherproofs and dries harder. Acrylic clear coats are mainly used in automotive applications over a base coat color or metallic paint. This is to give the base color a gloss surface.

Clear coat paint is usually used in automotive applications and is spray-on. It is used to give the metallic finish a glow. Polyurethane paint offers a better protection against weather and is usually intended for wood products

The main difference between 'clear coat' and polyurethane is a linguistic one. Polyurethane IS a clear coat, although a based on a newer technology. Both oil-based 'varnish' and 'poly' have their own pros and cons.

Basically they are the same. The only exception is that clear coat can sometimes be acrylic and not just polyurethane. Both are types of clear coats though.
