There are books and videos that are very helpful in learning to make a mixed drink. Some people even go so far as to attend a bartender school to learn.

Honestly the best way to learn to make mixed drinks is to have a small dinner party. Invite close friends over and experiment with different concoctions. Make something then have a few different people try it. Use their feedback to adjust future concoctions. Just remember different people like different things.

Mr. Boston's is indeed one of the great traditions in mixed drinks, but there are a lot of books and guides out there, there are even classes you can take. One suggestion is to start simple, choose a type of drink you enjoy, with just a few ingredients and work on perfecting that, otherwise this can get very expensive fast.

The Boston's guide to bar tending is a great tool to learn to mix drinks, but you could follow any recipe book.
