Is phenylalanine in diet drinks harmful?

I keep hearing mixed reports on this. I love diet soda.

Phenylalanine is not dangerous for human consumption. While it can cause health problems in large dosages, the small quantities used in diet drinks are not enough for this to happen.

The phenylalanine is not harmful to most people. If you have phenylketonuria, phenylalanine will kill you. It's the aspartame you should be concerned with in diet sodas, and the harmful effects on that have never been adequately proven in humans. Some people think it causes cancer, among other things, although this has never been proven in humans.

It is considered best to avoid added sweeteners in general. Some people claim that the artificial sweeteners give them hallucinations. Also, they say that drinking calorie free sweetened drinks causes an increase in appetite.

It depends on how you feel about eating chemicals. There are mixed reports about everything but I believe that natural sugar is always better than any substitutes.

Well we do not really know if these chemicals are harmful or not. The truth is that these chemicals have not been around long enough for us to have figured out their long term affects.
