The basic ratio of square footage to weight for a home is 2000 pounds or 1 ton per square foot of floor space. This estimate takes into consideration the contents within the floor space but does not include the weight of the foundation. All you need to do is multiply the square footage by 1 ton.

Doesn't pass the sanity check since houses have a lot of empty space. Besides, this equates to about 7 cents per pound of building material - not likely. Other sources show an average house to be about 120000 pounds.  add a comment

Lead weighs 710 lbs per cu ft. 2000 lbs per sq ft equates to 2.82 ft thick layer of lead. Not right. 50 or 60 lbs per sq ft is more likely and more in line with building materials.  add a comment

A 10-by-10-foot wood shed with a double door, an extra walk-in door and two windows weighs about 1,235 pounds as a ready-made kit. 12.35 lbs/ft2. 24,700 lbs for a 2,000 sf home of similar construction.  add a comment

The average house is going to weigh atleast 2000 pounds. The bigger the house the more it weighs. I think about one square foot of a house measures to be about 1 ton and what not. Therefore, just take your actual square area and then multiply by the number of tons.

A ton per square foot is way too much for a single-floor, wood-framed house! For perimeter foundations, we figure a ton per LINEAR FOOT of perimeter is sufficient bearing capacity for almost any type of construction. A 40' x 50' house should weigh less than 180 tons--not 2000!  add a comment

According to various "House-Movers", houses range from about 50 to 300 short-tons depending on size & materials. In comparison, (stripped-down) single-wide mobile-homes can weigh about 3 to 5 short-tons.

Depending on how old the house is, it's size and construction type change the weight range. Plaster instead of drywall or terracotta tiles on a roof change the weight dramatically. Items like a jetted tub or granite counter tops are much heavier than their less expensive counterparts as well so figuring an average weight is nearly impossible.

Jetted tubs are typically made of fiberglass, which is much lighter than the cast-iron tubs used in older construction.  add a comment

The average house weights about 2000 pounds. if you live in a mansion, it probably weighs about 10 000 pounds. It all depends on how big and wide your house is.

It will be like 3600 tons if you have 3600 sq.ft house. So, just add tons behind your house's sq.ft.

no way a residential house 1500sqft - 2500sqft would be more like 30-90 tons give or take.

The numbers used for the initial reply here and held to in the face of other's skepticism are wrong.... 50 lbs/ft2 1 story and 80 lbs 2 story w/o foundation. Concrete is 150 pcf of adding it in would be 200-230 lbs/ft2.
