Well tarmacadam or "tarmac" for short refers to a specific way of constructing roads. It is a tar penetrated macadam or in simple terms a combination of aggregate bound together with a medium. This form of paving was made obsolete with the introduction of asphalt. This method was patented by E. Purnell Hooley back in 1901.

Tarmacadam is pavement that has several layers of crushed stone. It has a tar binder that is smashed down to creat a smooth surface. This is best for patios or driveways, or residential areas in the community. It just depends on the amount of traffic that the area will have. Tarmacadam is a good thing in high traffic areas.
