Easter is named after Eoster a pagan fertility goddess. Many depictions of the devil are also derived from figures from Greek and Roman mythology such as Pan and the satyrs.

In the early days of Christianity, evangelists found that pagans converted more readily if pagan rituals and symbols were folded into Christianity. Hence, St. Patrick combined the pagan symbol with the Christian to get the Celtic cross, and elements of paganism were woven into many Christian celebrations, including Christmas.
