Octane is a hydrocarbon chemical with formula: CH3(CH2)6 CH3. If referring to octane rating in gas, that refers to how well a gas prevents itself from burning outside the car-cylinders.

Octane's definition is: any isomeric saturated hydrocarbon found in petroleum and used as a fuel and solvent. It is commonly used in fuels for cars and other motorized vehicles. The octane in fuel makes it burn hotter which gives more power to engines. This is why premium fuel is high octane, as it makes engines slightly more efficient.
