Most schools separate between six academic disiplins; Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Formal Sciences, and Professions and Applied Sciences. Humanities include subjects such as history, languages, literature, philosophy and religion. Researchers in these diciplines differ from those of Social and natural Sciences in that they don't limit themselves empirical investigations (facts only), but also have room for speculation.

The humanities are a broad area of study that fall under the even broader umbrella of liberal arts. Humanities focus on some aspect of the human condition, such as history, theology, philosophy or languages. Generally these majors require a great deal of analysis and writing.
