Dormant oil is also known as horticulture oil. It's usually mineral oil based and is a pesticide. It's used in dormant season before plants leaves and flowers fully develop. It kills insects mainly by suffication. Most insects breathe through spirals or tubes, oil clogs these causing the insect to be unable to breathe.
