The Transmission Neutral Safety switch disables the starter motor when the transmission is in gear. This prevents the vehicle from moving unexpectedly when it is being started. Without it, turning the key with the car in gear would make the car move, causing possible injuries or property damage.

It is a switch that disables the start function unless the vehicle transmission is in neutral or park in order to prevent lurching forward or back upon startup.

A transmission neutral safety switch is one of the many modern safety features found on automobiles. This tiny switch is design to keep a person from starting a vehicle while it is in drive. It creates a circuit when the shifter is positioned in either park or neutral and allows the car to start.

In vehicles with automatic transmissions there is a neutral safety switch to prevent the started from functioning when the car is in gear. The idea behind this is to prevent the car from accidentally being started in gear and causing injury anyone in or near the car. The existence of this switch prevents automatic cars from being jump started.
