What is a neutral safety switch on my Cadillac DeVille? Where is it?

It's located on the automatic transmission under the car,usually on the right hand side and should have some wiring connected via a plug. also known as a transmission inhibitor switch replacement cost from $20 - $100, easy fix if your handy with a spanner.
