An independent company will send an auditor in to balance all the books for the business. Generally this has been used in the hotel/motel industry. The auditor will usually balance credit card receipts and check discrepancies in billing. They will run reports of all the financial activities of the business.

A night audit is taken at the end of the day. It can include information about customers, credit card trasactions, charges, and other statistics. The night auditor usually works through the whole night and gathers the information of the day to help prepare for the next day.
