Another option is drapery that opens to one side, or you can always use roman blinds that are pulled up over the window into a valance or cornice board to store.

Most horizontally folding blinds make a good patio door covering. These can be found at a blind shop or, in many cases, through your local home improvement center. Blinds can be ordered online, but it is difficult to be sure that they are opaque enough to block the neighbors' view into your home.

Verticle blinds are best for privacy and they can be opened for the door or sunlight. There is also a new vinyl covering at hardwares stores that cover the glass. It comes in various designs and can be cut to any size and it peels off. You can also use a valance and not cover the windows at all.

To cover the doors and save energy you may want to choose a heavy curtain that you can draw open from the door side of the window.

For a patio door covering, I would definitely choose vertical blinds. I believe they are the only ones you can open and close to be completely out of the way to you can actually use the patio door. For privacy, you can keep them completely closed, or partially open to have a bit of light come through.
