Straw works well to cover the ground after planting grass seed to hold the grass seed there until it germinates and begins to grow, and it then decomposes.

Straw is a good temporary ground cover for a crop (such as strawberries), but does not have the long term benefits of other living ground covers such as pachysandra. Straw has good insulative properties, but does break down over time. A living ground cover can provide years of beautiful, low maintenance beauty.

I find that straw is the worse thing. It blows all over the place, because it is so light. It doesn't look good, smells terrible when it is wet.
