Question by  reshmimanoj (13)

What is 3 minus negative seven?

I forgot how to do these problems.

+6

Answer by  Clement (1453)

Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding its opposite. Hence, 3 - (-7) is the same as 3 + 7, which equals 10. Similarly, adding a negative number is the same as subtracting its opposite, so 3 + (-7) is the same as 3 - 7, which equals -4.

+4

That would be written as 3 - (-7). To solve this problem, the general rule is to change subtraction into addition and then to take the opposite of the second number. So, the problem changes to 3 + (+7), which is 10.
