What happens when bail is forfeited?

If an individual does not appear, his/her bond is forfeited, which means that the person who put up the bond to cover the bail then loses the amount, while the bond company is responsible for the balance. When the judge orders the bond forfeited, it reverts to the jurisdiction and is not recoverable.

A person who has been arrested and let out on bail fails to reappear in court for his/her criminal trial forfeits his/her bail.
