When a woman goes into menopause, her hormone levels, especially estrogen, start to drop. She will eventually stops having periods. Sometimes a period will occur a few months in a row then she won't have one for awhile. Soon her periods stop altogether. This process can take several years before menopause ends.

When women go into menopause, their ovaries stop releasing eggs. This can also trigger hormonal changes, which can result in hot flashes, mood swings, fatigue, and some abdominal pain. These symptoms usually decrease over time.
