An acetaminophen overdose overwhelms the liver's ability to metabolize this drug completely. And accumulation of harmful intermediate metabolites from acetaminophen poisons the liver cells. Which can cause liver failure and kill the person if the overdose isn't treated within 8 hours of the overdose.

In the case of an overdose, the person must be taken to a hospital immediately. If treated withing 8 hours, there is a good chance of recovery. Without prompt treatment, an overdose can lead to liver failure and death within days.
