Depositions are taken in preparation for cases, but witnesses who give depositions don't necessarily have to testify in court. If your testimony is required in court, either a lawyer will ask you to testify, or you'll receive a subpoena compelling you to testify. However, many witnesses in depositions are never required to testify in court.

Very often, cases are settled after depositions are taken in order to avoid the additional expense of a court case. If the matter cannot be settled, however, it will go to court and you will likely be called to testify.
