What does ELPH stand for in the S500?

Actually, it doesn't stand for anything, though most people believe it does since it's all capitals. Originally, it was written as Elph, but then changed to ELPH. It's a combination of the word Elf and the word Photography. It's used because not only is it memorable, but because it's a unique word, it can be used as a trademark.

ELPH refers to a specific line of Canon Camera models. The letters alone stand for Electronic Potography. The model name S500 represents the 5 megapixel camera.

Many would say "Electronic Photography" however the ELPH brand existed before digital cameras were in use so instead it's really combination of the word 'elf' and 'photograph.'
