Assuming this is a white Sonoma, it has a design feature that allows it operate normally in only extreme temperature environments(either hot or cold). It sounds like your vehicle was part of an Artic exploration at one time and it is home sick. You could consider sitting on a bag of ice while driving or moving.

There are many possibilities but it sounds like your engine is no longer in time meaning your timing belt is stretched and worn out.

This will cause it to back fire and stall if it as a hair line crack. check the timing could be off, and if not then check timing chain and gears.
