Usually the small holes in the yard signal the presence of moles, little furry brown creatures. There are methods for getting rid of them, humane and not.

Snakes have a habit of making small round holes in yards. Try tossing moth balls in the hole to slow the paths of snakes.

Depending on the size, the culprit is most likely a mole. If it is big, it may be a groundhog or prairie dog, depending on where you live.

It could be animals burrowing and digging. Keep an eye on the holes and see if you can tell what kind of animal is making them.

They are almost certainly being caused by some sort of small, burrowing animals, such as moles. Other possibilities include armadillos and rabbits.
