Yellow snot is a definite sign of infection. This could mean anything from just a 'common cold', to a serious sinus infection, to a cold or illness even more serious. If it continues longer then a few days, seriously consider seeing a health care physician.

You may produce some yellow snot first thing in the morning from mucus that has been sitting in your sinuses overnight. Infection could cause additional yellow snot to occur.

A few factors can cause yellow snot. The most common being an infection that links to the sinus cavity in the body. Clear snot means no infection. Also, if you are in a smoky environment, or a toxic environment, that could also cause you to have yellow snot. It's not good if you do, though!
