All dogs carry staphlyococcus bacteria on their skin. It is not a problem until the skin is broken by injury or irritation from fleas, allergy, etc. and the bacteria enters and causes infection. Antibiotics are necessary to treat the infection. If untreated, a staph infection will spread and eventually kill the dog.

Staph infections in canines are a bacterial skin infection that can be caused by several factors. Allergies, poor care from owner, weak immune system, and hormonal problems can all cause staph infections. A vet will perform a microscopic test to see if it is bacterial.
