Hard knots under the skin could be sebaceous cysts which are swelling of sweat glands. Most common areas involved are Back, Armpits, Scalp and chest.

It could be something as simple as a pimple or something as complex as cancer. It can depend on the actual size,shape,or color. Other causes might include various types of cysts or warts.

Hard knots under the skin can mean a lot of things. it may represent anything from a soft tissue tumor such as a lipoma or fibroma to a scar.

This will depend on the location. Your lymph nodes could be swollen because your body is fighting off infection, you could have a cyst, it could be a number of things. However, if it just came out of nowhere you might want to get a checkup.
