You will want to remove all the cabinets and hardware. Sand off the old finish. Clean well to remove any residue from sanding. Once you have clean bare wood you can finish with your new paint or stain and then seal. Be sure if you paint to use a paint made for cabinets and the humidity of a kitchen.

check if the wood is in good condition. If it is infected with termites, get anti termite injections for it. Seecondly, check whether the polish is ok. If it isn't, get rubbing alcohol and polish, after cleaning with alcohol, polish it 2-3 times. Also lubricate the joints and hinges as well as drawers. Dry it and its ready.

If the original finish is shiny, you first need to degrease with TSP. If you are staining them, then you need to remove all of the old finish, which means stripper or heavy sanding. If you're painting them (very trendy right now), then just sand. Best finish is to spray with an airless sprayer, or brush with paint.

Thoroughly clean the cabinets to remove all grease and dirt. Then lightly sand them so the finish will adhere. Apply stain, then a polyester finish. You can also paint them.

We did something really nice. We cut the wood out of the doors-- leaving a wooden border around the edge. Then installed glass. Next, we cut the shelves the same way, placing glass within the wooden border. Last, we added "can" lights inside so light shines through the glass shelves.
