Because steroids are used over a long period of time, side effects can be a concern. Inhaled steroids can lead to thrush in the mouth. Rinsing your mouth after use can prevent this. Other possible side effects are hoarseness, bruising and weight gain due to increased appetite. Less common symptoms are nausea and rapid heart beat.

if inhaled steroids are used in higher doses thrush and hoarseness may occur. Another side effects of steroid dependent asthma are stomach irritation ("indigestion"), fluid retention causing a sense of bloating, hunger, sleeplessness, blurry vision, short temper, and difficulty concentrating.

They may make it harder for a person with asthma to breathe properly. Since both effect the lungs, it may worsen the state the lungs are in. Consult a doctor if you are concerned about the effects on the body from this kind of treatment.
