A scapegoat is something or someone who is used as an excuse to take the blame (usually unfairly) for something.

Scapegoating is putting the blame for something onto an innocent party. That person is referred to as the "scapegoat. " An example would be if four of the five children in a class steal some candy, but convince the teacher that the one student who did not do so was the only guilty party.
