The best example of a satire is George Orwell's "Animal Farm", which explores the politics of the time it was written (1945). It examines the abuse of power in society by using farm animals to mimic human society. Another example is the novel Huckleberry Finn by the famous Mark Twain.

Jonathan Swift doesn't really expect people to eat their babies to solve the problem of famine. He says that it would keep people from being hungry, but he doesn't really believe this to be an acceptable solution. That is the essence of satire--making fun of something to prove a point.
