One winter, my lips were extremely chapped. I would keep applying chap stick, but it only seemed to get worse. In fact, the corners of my mouth started bleeding. When I went to my dentist to get my teeth cleaned, they told me that it was an allergic reaction to chap stick.

Exposure to the sun for a long time, dry lips, a bad lip balm, lip gloss or lipstick can lead to painful lips. It could also be a viral or fungal infection or even an allergic reaction to some food you ate or some chemicals you were exposed to.

The most common causes of lip irritation are either local conditions (such as dry weather which can cause the lips to crack) or an allergic reaction of some sort. If it's the former, lip balm type products can help. For the latter, see a dermatologist.

Your lips could just be really dry. If that's the case use chapstick. Or your lips could be allergic to something you came in contact with.

Most causes of lip irritation are from chemical or element exposure. Protecting you lips from the cold and wind is key. Chemical irritants such as smoking and cleaning chemicals such as bleach can cause irritation that should heal when use has stopped.

Usually then are caused from the foods we eat. Sometimes things don't agree with out system and irritations pop out on the body. If you get many of them I would see a doctor and be sure it is nothing serious. Maybe the Dentist would also be a good person to see.

There are many possible causes. Chapping, which is usually caused by windy or cold weather, is probably the most common. Others include sunburn and burns from eating or drinking something that is too hot.
