Hydronic boilers use water to heat buildings through radiators or baseboard heaters. They heat up water and circulate it through those devices to warm areas of the house. The water is usually heated using natural gas, since it is the safest and least expensive method.

This is basically what we used to use in the US, and still predominant in Europe, heating water to steam and dispensing it through radiators or baseboards, I guess we would call it forced hot water- far more heat and space efficient than forced hot air which is more common in post-60's American homes.
