My dog has bumps all over. The vet said it is an allergy and gave him medicine to ease the irritation. It is better today but I am worried it is mange. How can I tell?

Mange is a parasitic infestation that is treated to cure, not "ease." Allergies are reactions to various substances/toxins, and are hard to determine in an animal. Give your dog Brewer's Yeast, available at any store that sells vitamins/supplements. Dosing is by weight and is listed on the label.

Mange is probably the first thing your vet would have tested your dog for. If you are not sure if your dog was tested, call your vet and ask if your dog was tested for mange. If the dog was not tested for mange, request that your dog be tested.

If it were mange, your vet would have told you so and prescribed a series of dips to deal with it. The fact that it is responding positively to medication tells you that the vet has diagnosed it correctly and has given you the right prescription. Follow your vet's directions, and your dog should be fine.

Personally, I'd take them to another vet to get a second opinion. Mange isn't something you want to let go on forever because it spreads very easily from dog to dog. Ask this second vet to run mange tests on him. Mange usually doesn't include bumps, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Mange can often be confused with other types of skin irritations. Oftentimes a vet has to diagnose it by doing a skin scraping and performing a biopsy to look at under a microscope.
