Unlike Alcatraz, the U.S. Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kansas, is still in operation today, with over 2,000 prisoners. It was a maximum-security prison until 2005, when it was changed to a medium-security prison. It houses male prisoners.

From 1935-2005, Leavenworth was a maximum security federal prison. Since 2005, it has been medium security for civilians. The military prison, the military's only maximum security facility, is located on the same property, about four miles north of the civilian prison. Both are operational.
