If you know for a fact that someone is in prison, you can phone the Bureau of Prisons in that state for an address. If you want to know if someone remains incarcerated because of a vested interest, you can call the police department or the prosecutor that worked the case and get verification.

Many states offer the ability to search for inmates currently incarcerated on their websites. If you are unsure as to what state they are in your best bet may be a google search to find where they were convicted.

Many states (if not all) have on-line databases that allow you to search for the location of a prison inmate for free. To find the database that you need, run a search for "Department of Corrections Inmate Search. " If you know the state, include the state's name as part of your search.

First you need to find out whether the person you are looking for is in a county jail, state prison, or federal prison, and in which state. Then search the internet for the person you are looking for. You can write to Federal Bureau of Prisons and request information.
