If before the fuel gauge stopped working it was fluttering back and forth, then it stopped, what caused this?

First, check fuses. Then the filter and pump. In some vehicles, this can happen as a warning before it goes out. This can also be caused when the cable itself is bad, worn, or shorted.

Maybe your fuel gauge swimmer is broken or you have a bad connection in the wiring. Check with a multimeter and confirm the wiring.

I have a 2003 Infiniti G35 Coupe and the last 3 fillups only moved the fuel gauge up past 3/4 tank. After my last fillup, I drove about 75 miles and filled up again and only managed to put in about 2. 5 gallons, and the fuel gauge was still fluttering around 3/4 tank.

I have a 2000 Cadillac Escalade and just recently my gas gauge started to flutter.What happens if it stops completely?is this just an indicator that the fuel pump is about to go out,or will the pump go when gauge stops fluttering.
