Digging up any plant is a very delicate procedure and a Bird of Paradise is no exception. If you're digging it up just to get rid of it, use a shovel and dig away. If you want to transplant it, dig deep and leave a lot of room around it so you don't damage roots.

Be very careful of the roots when you dig it up make sure you don't cut any of the roots they bleed and you can lose the entire plant. when you put it in the new hole make sur you have the hole big enough for the roots to stretch out and grab on.

Make sure to take as much as the root mass as possible when transplanting, water it before you dig it so it is easier and once planted it. If you decide to divide it, remember that the blooming/flowering will stop for several years until your plant is well established.

To transplant the plant, measure the plants height and use that measurement as the distance to start digging around the plants entire diameter. Then dig down the same amount and lift out. Don't worry about this if you are throwin the plant away. Jut chop and dig out.
