Dogs don't need to be given worm medicine unless they have worms. This can be determined by a fecal test or blood test. Heartworm medicine should be given on a monthly basis.

In areas where heartworm is an issue dogs should get a monthly heartworm prevention. For intestinal worms only when they test positive for worms should they be given worm meds.

Each de-wormimg medicine is different and puppies require worm medication more often than adult dogs. You should always read the insert or pamplet that comes with the medicine of your choice. The best bet would be to ask your veterenarian.

The answer to this question varies considerably among different dogs and regions of the country. Your veterinarian may treat symptomatically or only if worms are seen in a fecal exam.
