Swordfish, of the sort that are kept in tropical fish tanks, are livebearers giving birth to young. The are pregnant for about twenty eight to thirty two days before giving birth. Ocean going swordfish, of the sort that are caught by fishing, are egg layers and spawn eggs rather than being pregnant with live young.

Spawning season is the months of July and August, although it does occur year round in the warmer waters of the Caribbean, Florida coasts, the Gulf of Mexico, and other places. Development of the baby begins within 2 1/2 days after fertilization. When hatched, they are about 4 mm long.

Pregnancy denotes the time during which a female carries a developing offspring in her uterus; thus swordfish do not get pregnant. Their offspring are hatched from buoyant, seafaring eggs.
