You can include a statment at the bottom of the invitation that says business attire, formal attire or evening attire. If you want you can add a please to the phrase. Or you can verbally spread the word that it's a formal or cocktail dress party.

Write on the party invitations that there the theme that you are having. Say "Please Dress in This Theme". Most people will be willing to do so. However, i'm sure there is going to be a few who don't.

After you have put the invitees names, and the information, you may place how you would like your guests to dress near the bottom of the invitation. You could put, "dress to impress", "black tie only" (if you want to be really fancy", or "(semi)-Formal".

Keep it simple and straightforward. Examples might be "Black Tie" or "Black Tie Optional", "Formal","Evening Wear" "Suit and Tie for men, cocktail dress for women" "proper attire"
