There are several vents available: static, ridge, turbine, and starter vents, to name some. Different kinds work better in different climates. But you always need vents in two positions: intake, located on the downslope edge of the roof and let air int the attic, and exhaust, which are located near the ridge line and allow air to escape the attic.

With either ridge vents, solar powered vents, gable end vents or turbine vents, off ridge venting to name a few ways.
