How do you time a 6.5hp Briggs and Straton push mower?

My lawn mower engine needs timing.

Many times the timing can be easily adjusted by removing the spark plug and cleaning it. The spark plug can be removed with the correct tool and then wiped off with a towel.

Spark timing is set with the flywheel key while the valve timing is set by lining up the timing marks on the crankshaft and cam.

The engine cowling has to be removed, and the flywheel nut taken off. At that point you will be able to see if the keyways are aligned or not. If they are not the flywheel will have to come off and the key replaced. This should help you time your motor.

Remove the shroud and then the flywheel from the engine. Next make sure the points are gapped properly. When you install the flywheel use a new crank key.
