Briggs & Stratton had a bad oil leak problem with some of their earlier vertical shaft engines. Is yours one of them? This was due to a faulty bolt on the engine. If this is the issue, you will need to actually remove the engine to repair it.
For starters, find out where exactly the oil is leaking from. Put a cardboard or paper under the engine area and see where the oil drips. From there you can decide what to do with your Briggs Stratton mower.
A gasket leak is a very common cause of such a bad oil leak. Is your engine more than a few years old? Remove the engine, let out the oil, flip it around, remove the sump and locate the gasket and change it - use the same size and thickness.
I'd strongly suggest checking for a a leaky crankshaft oil seal and a casting problem in addition to the gasket. if you're not sure do get a pro to check it out. posted by
