You actually want your ears to pop, it's a way to equalize the pressure that changes in the cabin. Anything that moves your jaw should assist. Chewing gum, drinking some water, or holding your nose and blowing can help equalize your ears. The poping sound can happen whenever the pressure changes.

The best way is to chew gum. If you don't have gum anything you can chew will be fine. If you don't have anything to chew you could open your mouth repetitively like yawning.

Try to eat chewing gum during the takeoff and landing. You should also try to yawn in order to open the channels to the ears.
