How do you solve an equation for two variables?

I am having a hard time understanding variables in math.

Multiply one equation with a number such that coefficients of one variable are same. Subtract one equation from the other Substitute this value in one of the equations.

You would first have to isolate one variable. Determine what that one variable equals and then plug that back into the equation in its place. Now you can solve it.
