How do you replace a cam sensor for a BMW 325i?

I would like to know if it is possible for me to do this myself or if I need to take it to the shop.

You can do it yourself but it is going to be tricky to get to. You may need to pull the starter off or the alternator off to be able to get to it. It is only two bolts holding it on but again it will be tricky to install.

If you have a good amount of automotive knowledge then you can do it yourself. However you will probably have to remove everything off the front of the engine to access the timing belt. If you buy repair manual it will be a lot easier.

Loosen the clamp bolt and remove the negative battery terminal. Unplug the cam sensor wiring harness. Remove the two mounting bolts on the sensor using wrench. Now pull the sensor from the shaft and discard. Finally insert the new cam sensor into the sensor shaft and replace two mounting bolts.

Unless you have an extensive tool collection, you probably want to bring this to the dealer or a BMW mechanic that has done this before. BMW only makes their tools available to certified mechanics who have been through their training course. Leave this one to the pro's.

You may need to take it in. Or you can go buy a manual for the car at an auto parts store, tell them the make and model of the car.
