Pitting edema is measured the size of the pit and the time taken for rebound. If the pit is upto 2mm deep and rebound immediately, grade is 1+. For 4mm, grade is 2+, for 6mm and 10 seconds to rebound - grade is 3+ and for 8mm or deeper and 20 seconds or more to rebound, it is graded 4+.

To measure pitting edema, thumb is pressed into the skin over tibia, fibula or sacrum bone and released. This causes a pit or a depression on the skin and remains in this condition for some time. The depth of this pit is then measured and recorded in millimeters.

There is four grades to this condition. The first pitting leaves quickly, the second disappears in 10-15 seconds. The third stage may last one minute with extreme swelling and number 4 lasts 2-5 minutes with distortion.

Pitting edema can be measured by placing two fingers into the edema and press. Then remove the fingers and watch how many seconds it takes for the fingerprints to disappear. The number of seconds indicates the number of degrees - from 1-4. 4+ pitting edema remains after 45-60 seconds, while 1+ edema disappears within 15-20 seconds.

Pitting edema is measured by the time it takes for the skin to return to "normal" after it has been poked by a finger. For example you have edema on your ankle, I push in to your ankle with my finger, It takes one second for the tissue of the ankle to return =+1, 2 seconds= +2, 3 seconds=+3. etc.
