Possums go where the food is. The don't venture too far away from where they were born, but they will scoot around looking for food, particularly around trash bins and dumpsters. They're not very bright, and while they aren't particularly handsome animals, they mean no harm. Keep your area free of food/trash, and they will eventually move on.

You can set traps (local law enforcement should be able to bring you one) with bait to attract them and if you wish you can relocate it to a forest home. Other than that using poisons could put other animals at risk and shouldn't be used. If you can't get a trap or catch it yourself, call Animal Control.

Trapping and removing is common. Be sure you aren't providing pet food or garbage, or shelter. They also don't like ammonia, moth balls, or predator urine. Block their dens.

There are several ways to get rid of opossums that do not involve killing the animals. One is to get a 3-d coyote, available at various garden supply outlets.it looks like a real coyote, which scares them.Another way is to get an animal repellent which uses a high-frequency sound that bothers the animals to discourage them from coming onto your property.
