How do you correct a horse vice, like pawing at the ground?

If your horse does this while it's tied to something you probably won't be able to fix it. Just keep the lead rope short. If he's doing it while you ride just gently back him up or make him go forward so he stops.

To correct any horse vice, you must first determine the cause. Usually something like pawing is caused by an emotion such as anxiety. Do not add to anxiety by yelling or throwing something at him/her. Be patient as it will take a while to correct something that has evolved over time.
